My advice for first year students on how to get more involved on campus would be to have an open mind. I landed my role through VOCO due to that. In first year, I showed up to every campus club advertisement day, and thoroughly looked at each table. At that point I knew two things about myself. Firstly, I loved the outdoors, so I made it my priority to find a club that fulfilled that passion. Secondly, I loved people and needed to make friends, which motivated me to sign for something. Eventually I found VOCO and showed up to almost every event, making more friends than I imagined. Through networking, I became known within the club, which lead to my invitation for an executive position.

What advice would you give to a first-year student on how to be more involved on campus?

I have learnt many lessons by being involved on campus. The one that stands out the most to me is the influence of networking, and the ability it gives you to make amazing connections with your peers, and people from the community. Getting involved and making relationships when you can is important, and can have a positive impact in your future.

What lessons have you learned from your involvement on campus?

Recognized for:

Outstanding role in Varsity Outdoor Club Okanagan (VOCO)

My role on campus is being the Varsity Outdoor Club Okanagan’s Executive Secretary. I host meetings biweekly, take meeting minutes, lead/organize various events within the club, work alongside 13 other executives in efforts to support the 500+ members of the club, communicate with members through social media, and lastly, continue to create and maintain interpersonal relationships within the outdoor community in Kelowna.
