Recognized for:

Outstanding role during Aboriginal Students’ Orientation, 2017

UBC made my educational experience a possible reality by first awarding me a Major Entrance Scholarship and then by allowing me to explore and expand horizons passionate to me. When I first applied, I was determined to attend a university that was reflective of an inclusive, pluralistic educational space valuing social justice. I quickly learned that UBC really values contributions, believes in reciprocity, and will help you grow and become involved with shaping community experiences.

From joining Friends of Médecins Sans Frontières UBC club in first year, to joining the executive team for the Aspire Pre-Health Professionals Conference in second year (I transferred to UBCO), I met like-minded students from all over the world. As an executive leader for the Aspire mock multi-mini interviews (MMI), opportunities were provided for participants to gain needed experience and interview skills. Appointed as a UBCO Pre-Med Club executive, I also took on the role of Aboriginal Student Coordinator, which I used as a platform to help other Aboriginal students interested in applying to medical school. The great response showed a need, so I volunteered for Destination UBCO as an Aboriginal Peer Leader and as a Senior Peer Leader for the Faculty of Science. It was another great opportunity to give back to the community, lead events, speak on the student panel, and welcome prospective students to campus. Afterwards, as an Aboriginal Student Orientation volunteer, I helped orientate new students with the UBC campus, coming full circle.

This year as the Pre-Med Club President, creating the opportunity to organize events has opened doors for students interested in navigating how to apply to medical school. Advice that I would give a first year student is to become more involved on campus is to not be afraid to attend events and take on leadership roles, especially if you see a gap. Your efforts will be appreciated and great communities will be created.
