Nicholas Reitsma

My number one tip for young students would be to talk to as many as people as you can and do your best to find a group with similar interests and values. University can seem daunting, being surrounded by a ton of new faces but finding a community that you are passionate about makes the experience that much more enjoyable and meaningful.

What advice would you give to a first-year student on how to be more involved on campus?

I've learned a lot about what it takes to organize events, just how valuable student participation is in making the university a better place, and just how many different programs you can be a part of. It's very motivating to see just how many people are passionate enough about what they do to help others. That being said, there is a constant need for new faces and the work that is being done is only the beginning.

What lessons have you learned from your involvement on campus?

I'm one of the leaders of SAMHI (student-athlete mental health initiative) and a local advocate for mental health problems with youth in the Kelowna area. I have given my story on mental health issues for the Not Alone campaign by the KGH Foundation. Other than mental health work I volunteer by coaching young goalkeepers in the area and spending time at the hospital.
